Everything you might want to know about CalmShield

In a panic right now? Short steps for a panic attack

Panic and everyday use

Is CalmShield a replacement for therapy or medication?

No. CalmShield offers supportive tools and education for anxiety and panic. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Many people use it alongside therapy: for exposure homework, between sessions, or when a wave hits outside the office. If you're struggling, please reach out to a qualified mental health professional.

What makes CalmShield different from general meditation apps?

General wellness apps are mostly meditation and sleep stories. This one's for when your heart is doing the thing. SOS, night mode, aftercare, a fear ladder if you want it, tools that remember what helped. Calm when you want it. Panic support when you don't.

How is CalmShield different from other panic apps?

Most panic apps stop at a breathe button. This covers the messy middle too: a body-first SOS you can open from a home-screen widget, Wave Coach that hands off to aftercare, night mode, a fear ladder, courage logs, and journals that stay on your phone. No shame streaks.

What should I do during a panic attack?

Start body-first: put a hand on your chest, slow your breath, and name five things you can see. CalmShield's SOS mode walks you through this step by step — from the app tab, or from a home-screen or lock-screen widget. If symptoms feel like a medical emergency, especially chest pain you have not felt before, seek immediate care.

Who is CalmShield for?

Anyone who experiences anxiety or panic and wants practical, gentle support, whether you have occasional waves, nightly panic, health anxiety, social anxiety, or ongoing nervous-system sensitivity.

Can I use CalmShield at night without waking myself up?

Yes. Night-panic mode uses a dim, dark UI with an optional black screen. It is designed for 3am panic without bright light or complex navigation.

What is the fear ladder?

A gradual exposure tool. You list situations that trigger anxiety, rank them, and take small brave steps, logging courage moments along the way. It is based on exposure therapy principles used by CBT therapists worldwide.

Does CalmShield help with health anxiety?

Education content explains why panic sensations feel dangerous but are often adrenaline, not proof of illness. SOS grounding and journal tools help you separate alarm from actual emergency. For persistent health anxiety, professional support is recommended.

How does CalmShield help during a sudden panic attack?

CalmShield helps during a sudden panic attack by starting with the body, before any writing or lesson. SOS opens in one tap from the app tab, or from a widget on your home screen, lock screen, or Control Center. 1. Open SOS and take the first body step. On day one that step is a cold reset. After you log what helped, that step can move to the front. 2. Stay with Wave Coach through the peak: steady contact, notice your feet and the room, make the exhale longer, let the surge be here, then ride it down. 3. When the peak passes, aftercare asks what helped, even a little. That note is what the next SOS can lead with. CalmShield does not record your voice or turn spoken worries into a task list. Guided audio plays to you. A short typed note after the wave is what carries into the next SOS.

Can an app detect early signs of a panic attack?

CalmShield can notice a more sensitive day from signals you already store. It does not detect a panic attack as it starts, and it does not continuously monitor breathing rate. The connection is optional and read-only. On iPhone, CalmShield reads Apple Health. On Android, it reads Health Connect. An Apple Watch contributes only when that watch has already written samples into Apple Health. CalmShield does not connect to the watch itself. Each time you open the app, while the connection is on, CalmShield reads three values and compares them with a baseline kept on your phone. Heart rate variability is SDNN from Apple Health and RMSSD from Health Connect. Both feed the same comparison. 1. Connect Apple Health or Health Connect and approve read-only access to sleep, heart rate variability (HRV), and resting heart rate. 2. CalmShield compares the latest sample with your baseline: sleep under 85% of baseline, HRV under 90% of baseline, or resting heart rate over 108% of baseline. 3. If one of those is off, Morning Check and Home can suggest a lighter plan. That is a sensitivity forecast from your own history, not a diagnosis and not an alarm that a panic attack is starting. Readings stay on the device unless you later turn on account sync. You can disconnect in settings.

What is the difference between CalmShield and Rootd?

Rootd is a panic-focused app: in-the-moment calming and education about panic attacks. CalmShield is in the same category, and it is built as a loop. SOS starts with the body, Wave Coach stays through the peak, aftercare and a panic log record what helped, and night mode keeps the screen dim. CalmShield also covers health anxiety, social anxiety, and wired days. CBT workbooks ask you to track thoughts during distress. During a crisis, CalmShield opens a body-first SOS from a widget instead. Optional Apple Health or Health Connect readings are a slower loop: sleep, heart rate variability, and resting heart rate against your baseline, used to soften the next plan. They do not run the SOS in real time. Neither app is therapy or emergency care. CalmShield does not publish a rating, a price, or a feature score for Rootd.

What is the difference between CalmShield and MindShift CBT?

MindShift CBT, from Anxiety Canada, is a CBT self-help app. People use it for thought records, experiments, and coping tools you work through on purpose. CalmShield is built for the moment when writing a thought record is too much: one-tap SOS, Wave Coach, night mode, and aftercare. MindShift fits practice between waves. CalmShield fits the peak, the hour after, and 3am. Neither is therapy. CalmShield does not publish a rating, a price, or a feature score for MindShift CBT.

What is the best app for acute panic attacks?

The best app for an acute panic attack is the one you can start in one tap, without choosing a course or filling in a form. CalmShield is built for that moment: body-first SOS from a widget, Wave Coach through the peak, a dim night path, and aftercare that remembers what helped. Rootd is a panic app known for in-the-moment calming and panic education. MindShift CBT is a CBT workbook, which fits practice between waves. None of these replaces a clinician or emergency services. New or severe chest pain needs medical help.

Getting CalmShield

Where can I download CalmShield?

CalmShield is launching on iOS and Android. Join the waitlist on our homepage for early access. Core panic tools are free forever: SOS, Panic Coach, Night Panic, breathing presets, five-senses grounding, and aftercare.

Does CalmShield work offline?

Many core tools work on-device. You can download audio sessions for offline use. SOS, Wave Coach, night mode, breathing, and journal work without a connection.

Can I open SOS without unlocking the full app?

Yes. Add an SOS widget to your iPhone home screen, lock screen, or Control Center, or an Android home-screen widget and shortcut. One tap opens the panic plan.

How do reminders work?

CalmShield schedules gentle, local reminders based on your patterns. We never nudge between 10pm and 8am. You control all notification types in settings: morning check-in, wind-down, and smart insights can each be turned off.

Privacy, AI, and pricing

Is my journal private?

Yes. Personal entries like journal notes and mood logs are stored primarily on your device. We do not sell your data. See our Privacy page for full details on optional sync and health integrations.

Does the app use AI?

No. There is no chatbot and no language model. The optional weekly recovery summary is put together from your own logs by fixed rules. It is a recap, not a conversation, and never diagnostic or prescriptive. SOS, Wave Coach, and the other panic tools work without it.

Is CalmShield free?

Yes. Core panic support is free forever: SOS, Panic Coach, Night Panic, breathing presets, five-senses grounding, and aftercare. Extra courses, collections, visualizations, and full insights may need a subscription later. There is no paywall on crisis tools or in the first session.

Is my voice recording data private in CalmShield?

CalmShield does not record your voice. Guided sessions play audio to you. There is no voice-note archive. On-device processing is the default for journals, mood logs, recovery notes, and optional health readings. Connections between the app, this website, and our servers use TLS encryption (HTTPS). If you create an account, optional sync can store what you choose to sync on our servers so it can move between phones. Your private notes and biometric readings are never sold. They are never used to train external AI or language models. The optional weekly recap is written on your phone from numbers you already logged. If you are signed in and leave the server recap on, it receives those recovery metrics, not your full journal.
